When using a self-signed cert along with ActiveSync there are some steps needed to install the certificate on the windows mobile phone. It is important to understand these steps otherwise the phone will not be able to access email from your Exchange servers.
1. Setup Phone
a. From the welcome screen click Next
b. Enter the correct Time Zone, Date, and Time
c. Skip the password section (we will add a password when the policy is downloaded from Exchange)
d. Skip the setting up email account
2. Install Certificate
a. Copy the certificate from Exchange server to local workstation
b. Connect mobile phone to your computer
c. Browse to the where the certificate was downloaded and copy the certificate to the mobile phone
d. From the phone open the start menu
e. Navigate to File Explorer icon
f. Push Up to go to the root directory
g. Click on the certificate copied to the phone
h. When the warning message appears click Menu and select install
i. The Info screen will appear click OK
3. Active ActiveSync
a. From the phone open the start menu
b. Navigate to ActiveSync icon
c. Disconnect the phone from the computer
d. Click Menu and select Add Server Source
e. In the server address type, mail.domian.com. Click Next
f. On the next screen enter user name, password, and domain. Click Next
g. Choose the folders you want to sync with the phone
h. Once you click finish the phone will start to sync with the Exchange Server
i. At the Alert screen select OK to download the Exchange server policy
j. At the next Alert Screen select OK to setup a password
k. Choose Simple PIN password or Strong alphanumeric password
l. In the Password field enter at least a four character password (if the strong alphanumeric password is selected you must enter an uppercase letter, lowercase letter, numeral, and punctuation)
m. Enter the same password in the Confirm Password field
n. Click OK
